Maldives Customs Service has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Maldives Police Service and Maldives Immigration to share information via Global Travel Assessment System (GTAS). The Commissioner General of Customs, Mr. Abdulla Shareef, Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohamed Hameed and the Controller General of Immigration, Mr. Ahmed Hussain signed the MOU on behalf of the three Institutions on 3rd may 2021.
GTAS is a system designed by World Customs Organization and US Customs and Border Protection based on UN Security Council’s resolution 2178 and 2396, to assess and analyze Advance Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR). The main objective of the agreement signed is to share API/PNR information with Maldives Police Service and Maldives Immigration via the system established in Maldives Customs Service. Due to this, border security monitoring mechanism will be further developed in ensuring the safety and security of Maldives and information can be shared easily between Maldives Police Service and Maldives Immigration and Customs.
Establishing this system paves way for combating crimes such as terrorism, money-laundering and human trafficking, combating entry of drugs and goods prohibited in Maldives, and be vigilant against other illegal activities, refining the work of protecting the entry and exit doors of Maldives, establishing a safe and easy environment for international trade and travel, and implementing the laws and regulations at its fullest. And, such agreements will be signed with other relevant government agencies to refine this system.
