Maldives Customs Service has launched a reform and modernization program under the name of “Customs Re-Engineering Program (CRP)” on 1st September 2009. Under the program 95 officers from various sections are grouped into 15 teams, where each team is assigned with a project that involves redesigning and implementing solutions to a specific area of Customs work. 15 broad areas will be reviewed under the program that will encompass all major functions of Customs.

The main objectives of the program are:

• Selecting the best technology and practices, leading to a more streamlined and cost effective practices
• Implementation of WCO instruments such as Conventions, Recommendations and Standards to secure and facilitate trade

• Improve intelligence and risk management processes to secure and facilitate trade through the effective targeting of high-risk cargo
• To streamline and enhance the overall management of Customs procedures

The groups will report their progress to Office of the Principal Collector of Customs, where discussions will be conducted at the executive level before finalizing implementation.

The program is part of the Customs strategic planning activities and was inaugurated by the Minister of State, Principal Collector of Customs Mr. Mohamed Aswan.
